Why Worms?
Did you know that a tonne
of worms can eat a tonne of green and kitchen
waste in 1 - 4 days! - They basically can
eat their own body weight in this time! Not a
lot of people know that.
Worms are invertebrates, that
is they have a long, soft body and no back bone
or legs! They do not have a brain but do have
a nerve centre. They do not have eyes but are
sensitive to light.
There are hundreds of thousands
of species of worms and about 2,700 are earthworms.
Earthworms have been around for 120 million
years! They were even around when the dinosaurs
were here!
They like to eat most things,
one of their favourite foods is poo! Worms just
love horse manure, to them this is the same as
us going for a favourite Chinese dinner!

Why a Wormery?
It is becoming increasingly important
to ensure as much food and kitchen waste as possible
is separated from general household waste.
Regional authorities have been
told to set targets for cutting the amount of
waste going into landfill and increasing the amount
recycled. We must all do our bit.
Vermicomposting refers
to the process of using earthworms to turn organic
waste into vermicompost - also known as vermicast,
worm compost, worm castings, worm humus or worm
manure - a high quality natural fertilizer and
soil conditioner.
Become part of the home composting
revolution and recycle your kitchen/green/home
waste with our Beehive Wormery! Dispose of kitchen
and green waste, the worms will do all the work
and eat your waste!
